A TV debate about the easing measures in the corona pandemic is hot. Virologist Streeck describes an approach in “Maybrit Illner” that only a few people have thought of so far.

  • The federal and state governments disagree on the corona easing measures .
  • In "Maybrit Illner" discussed on Thursday politics, academia and journalists
  • Evening theme : "Germany is opening up - brave or risky?"

Berlin - After weeks of "abstinence", many Germans have got used to the (largely) social isolation? Not at all. Large sections of the population are pushing for easing the restrictions * and gradually starting up life that was previously known. No wonder: there is a large waiver and the economy also has to rely on business to get back on track.

Corona Talk on ZDF: Do we have to get used to Covid-19?

In  "Maybrit Illner" it went on Thursday at the extent to which the plans prepared by the federal states, the defeat of the coronavirus pandemic torpedo. On Thursday, Federal Chancellor Merkel made an urgent appeal to the public, saying that the government * and the federal states are on the "thinnest ice". Virologist Hendrik Streeck undoubtedly played the role of the reminder in the ZDF talk show on April 23 .

In the assembled (and connected) group, the scientist made assessments that involve a slightly different approach, because the previously common theses on the spread of the lung disease Covid-19 *. The 42-year-old discussed with Maybrit Illner and her guests Cem Özdemir (Greens), Herbert Diess (VW boss), Malu Dreyer (SPD) and journalist Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim .

While the public is just waiting to go back to familiar life, virologist Streeck, like other experts, does not see the country approaching the end of the corona pandemic . He not only considers that "we will have a second or even a third wave of infection". Rather, his guess is that humanity may need to get used to living with the Sars-CoV-2 virus . "... The way we live with the many other viruses with which we have problems in winter," says the expert.

Corona vaccine coming soon? "Untrustworthy because we just don't know"

At the end of the TV talk , Illner asked her guest Hendrik Streeck a question that was tough: Would it be good to rely on this solution in view of  the need for a vaccine ? After all, a suitable  vaccine or  herd immunity  is considered by many experts to be the most obvious way to combat the corona problem

The virologist invited by ZDF is rather skeptical about this point. Accordingly, it is not yet certain that a suitable vaccine * for the currently rampant coronavirus will be found at some point :

"Any prediction that we will have a vaccine is dubious because we simply do not know it. There are many pathogens where we have been researching vaccines for years *: HIV, hepatitis C, malaria, syphilis. There are no vaccines not all viruses). We cannot predict it. Vaccine research is far too surprising, "is the analysis of the man who should have known it professionally.

Christian Drosten is another virologist who became more well known in Germany due to the corona crisis - he was a guest at “Maybrit Illner” last week. The scientist recently issued a warning about a second, larger wave of diseases related to Covid-19. This would then have a "completely different force":
