Covid-19: Fernández, in favor of house arrest 0:50
(CNN Spanish) - A man who was arrested this Wednesday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for allegedly robbing an ice cream parlor, had been released a day before prison due to the coronavirus emergency.
A Buenos Aires Police source told CNN that the suspect was apprehended after being seen by officers as he ran down the street and shoved pedestrians.
When arrested, the officers saw that his description corresponded to that of a man who had stolen an ice cream parlor in the Almagro neighborhood and who had been denounced by one of the employees.
The police source told CNN that after requisitioning him, in the presence of witnesses, an official letter was found in one of his pockets saying that on Tuesday he had been released from the Marcos Paz Prison by the Court of Cassation. 620 Argentine pesos in cash were also found, equivalent to almost US $ 10.
The detainee confirmed to the police that he had been released to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
According to authorities, the suspect was serving a sentence for robbery and has a history of 15 other cases, including armed robbery and injuries.
The detainee remained in custody of a court and was ordered to be detained and transferred to a police station in the area, the police source told CNN.
Authorities did not indicate what precautions they would take to prevent the suspect from being at risk for contagion with the coronavirus by being behind bars again.
This Tuesday, the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, was in favor of granting house arrest to those incarcerated who are part of the population at risk for the coronavirus pandemic.
