Ireland has decided to extend the containment until May 18 to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, which has left 1,265 people dead and officially contaminated nearly 21,000 people in the country, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announced Friday.

" We need another two weeks of strict restrictions to further weaken the virus, " said Leo Varadkar in a television address. The confinement, which came into effect on March 28, was due to expire on Tuesday.
Schools, however, will only open in September.
