Nearly 3,000 crew members of a cruise ship belonging to tourism giant TUI have been quarantined on board after one of them tested positive for the new coronavirus, the company announced on Friday. Fifteen crew members of the Mein Schiff 3 were tested after showing mild flu symptoms. One of them at this stage tested positive for Covid-19. The 15 sailors were placed in isolation aboard the ship, in its home port of Cuxhaven, on the shore of the North Sea.

All of the 2,899 crew members also remain in quarantine on board "until further notice" , said TUI in a press release. Certain crew members, who had left the ship before last Tuesday, the date of its arrival at the port, were recalled on board, adds TUI. The cruise ship had no passengers on board, the group said.

"There is no danger for the population of the city and the district of Cuxhaven," assured the district chief, Kai-Uwe Bielefeld, and the mayor of Cuxhaven, Uwe Santjer (SPD). "The group of people who went on board for the official landing procedure (on arrival of the ship) can be precisely delimited and were equipped with personal protections" , according to them.
