(CNN) - Stephenie Meyer, author of the "Twilight" saga, fueled the fury of many fans after posting a mysterious countdown on her website, fueling speculation that the publication of "Midnight Sun", the long-awaited new novel by the hit series may have an imminent release.

The five "Twilight" novels, published between 2005 and 2008, tell the story of a teenage girl who falls in love with a vampire.

The books have sold over 100 million copies worldwide and were adapted into a successful film franchise with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as the main characters in Bella and Edward.

In 2008, Meyer planned to publish "Midnight Sun," which tells the story from Edward's perspective, but suspended plans after a copy of his manuscript was leaked and instead published a draft of the unedited book in response.

Fans of "Twilight" have been speculating on the date of the novel's eventual completion and release since then.

CNN has reached out to Fickle Fish Films and Meyer editor Little Brown for comment.

In addition to the countdown on Meyer's website, Fickle Fish Films, an independent producer co-founded by Meyer that focuses on bringing stories from books to movies, tweeted a short video of a starry sky and the words "5 days."

On Thursday, he tweeted again - “4 days” - prompting Twitter users to comment that they expected the impending announcement to be about “Midnight Sun”.

Other users on social media have speculated that the countdown might hint at a sequel to "The Host," a book about parasitic aliens published by Meyer in 2008, and which turned into a 2013 movie starring Saoirse Ronan.

In 2016, Meyer also released "The Chemist," a thriller about an escaping top secret, fueling speculation that the tweet might even hint at a new book or movie.

But no matter what happens, fans will only have to contain their enthusiasm until Monday to find out what it's all about.
