After being infected with new coronary pneumonia, antibodies are not necessarily immune? Experts disagree: should not be infected again

Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) recently warned that there is no evidence that antibodies are present in infected persons, which means they are immune to the new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19). Li Bingying, chairman of the Taiwan Children ’s Infectious Diseases Medical Association, believes that it is a misunderstanding, saying that the WHO ’s reasoning is based on "people with antibodies and viral nucleic acid detected in the body." However, detection of viral nucleic acid does not mean that there is live virus. There should be immunity afterwards and will not be infected again.

Will antibodies be immune? Expert analysis

WHO has reminded countries recently that if antibody testing results are used as indicators for resumption of work and loosening of travel restrictions, or if immunization passes or no-risk certificates are issued, rehabilitated persons may be neglected in epidemic prevention measures and increase the risk of virus transmission.

Li Bingying explained that the WHO's inference is based on the fact that patients already have antibodies and can also detect viral nucleic acids, reminding them that they may not be immune after infection. However, the current nucleic acid test is only to check the presence of viral nucleic acid, not a live virus strain. "So people with antibodies who detect viral nucleic acid in the respiratory tract do not mean that there is a live virus."

Dr. Li also proposed another possibility. In people with antibodies, the virus in the body has been eliminated, but the virus that sticks outside the body still exists. Li Bingying said that humans infected with the new crown virus must have immunity and will not be infected again.

Is the "immunization pass" feasible? Only for countries with large-scale infections

As for some countries discussing the implementation of the "immunization pass", is it feasible to allow people with antibody immunization to return to normal life? Li Bingying pointed out that people with antibodies will gradually disappear the virus. After a period of onset, if it is determined that the infected people produce antibodies, they can theoretically pass freely because there is no possibility of reinfection.

However, Dr. Li emphasized that even in countries with severe epidemics, the antibody positive rate is still limited, only about 5-20%, that is, 70% of the population does not have antibodies, especially the antibody rate in Taiwan is even less. For the practice of immunization passes, it may be Countries with large-scale infections need to consider.
