Earlier (April 28 and May 4), the Customs and Excise Department has successively detected two cases of smuggling of regulated dried shark fins at the Kwai Chung Customs Building Inspection Yard. Li Wenjie, the commander of the Customs Port and Maritime Division Container Cargo Inspection Unit, said that in two 40-foot imported containers, a total of 26 tons of suspected regulated dried shark fins were seized, including long-tailed sharks and sickle-shaped shark fins, with a total market value of about 8.6 million yuan. In terms of a single case, the seized weight and market value of the two cases broke the previous record of similar single cases.

Through the risk assessment, the Customs Port and Maritime Section personnel discovered two containers declared in Spanish "Pescado Seco" (ie dried fish) and imported into Hong Kong by Ecuador. Li Wenjie pointed out that although the container was not different during X-ray inspection, the Customs had found that the regulated shark fin would be mixed with the uncontrolled shark fin to hide people ’s eyes and ears, and because Ecuador had more endangered species, it decided to detain the two containers. .

Li Wenjie continued that Hai found that a large number of shark fins stored in nylon bags were found in the container. After being inspected and identified by experts from the AFCD, two cases were finally solved. Over 90% of the shark fins in the container were controlled. Zhang Guoxian, the commander of the Customs Port and Maritime Section's Marine Investigation Team, said that after the investigation, a 57-year-old man was arrested in Xiyingpan on the 29th of last month. The case is still under investigation and it cannot be ruled out that more people were arrested. The Customs believes that the criminals will continue to cover up the imports with the method of mixing fish and beads to increase the difficulty of their inspection, so they will continue to work together with the AFCD to combat smuggling cases.
