Following its colors is a tradition that embraces, that is adopted, that becomes its own. In many of the occasions it is inherited from the grandfather who told us about the 'Campeonísimo', the father who vibrated with the Chivas of Alberto Guerra or the uncle who enjoyed the 'Super Chivas of the 90' . Feats that the young fan of today recently revived with the silver age, led by Matías Almeyda.

The glory times of Guadalajara

By

History is a heavy stone book and what is written there with the chisel of success is never erased. The rojiblanco route has been marked by different periods: some bright and others dry. Among the stages that exalt the name of Guadalajara, two stand out above all: the Champion of the 50's and 60's, as well as the Sacred Flock of Matías Almeyda.

On January 3, 1957, the rojiblanco team defeated Irapuato 1-0 with a goal from the legendary "Chava" Reyes. Thus, the Sacred Flock won the first and most important title: it started the Champion, to date the most dominant team that Mexican soccer has had.

That Guadalajara was fortunate to have a generation of gold. Soccer players such as Salvador "Chava" Reyes, Héctor Hernández, Jaime "Tubo" Gómez, Guillermo "Tigre" Sepúlveda, Juan "Bigotón" Jasso, José "Jamaicón" Villegas, Isidoro "Chololo" Díaz, Sabás Ponce, Raúl "Pina" Arellano, Arturo "Cura" Chairez and Crescencio "Mellone" Gutiérrez recorded their names forever in the history of Chivas.

That first championship was achieved with Donald Ross as coach. Then Arpád Fekete arrived and Guadalajara conquered two more titles, in the seasons 1958-1959 and 1959-1960. Then came a change in banking, but far from falling, the Sacred Flock continued to shine its history. With Javier de la Torre as coach, glory came in the 1960-1961, 1961-1962, 1963-1964, 1964-1965 and 1969-1970 campaigns.

The last Champions League title also marked the end of Mexican soccer as it was played in its first professional stage. The Liguillas appeared in the following tournament and the one who finished in first place ceased to be champion. That Guadalajara won eight league titles in a span of 13 years. The national football was overwhelmingly dominated.

After decades of sporadic triumphs, Chivas finally found a way to build a glorious second epoch. The contemporary history of the Sacred Flock, which this May 8th is 114 years old, is marked by the team that, commanded by the Argentine coach Matías Almeyda, added five trophies to the rojiblancas showcases.

Chivas' romance with the Mexican National Team goes beyond the ideology of playing with only Mexican players or seeking to be the basis of the Aztec representative. Their link is clearly reflected in an essential statistic so that El Tri can transcend the World Cup's greatest fair: in goals.

Although it had no representation in the most recent Russia 2018 fair, Guadalajara is the team that has given the most goals to the national representative in World Cup history with 21% of total scores throughout its 15 participations, from Uruguay 1930 to Brazil 2014.
