Since April, there have been several attacks on businesses of Turkish origin in a town in Upper Bavaria. The police have now arrested a suspect.
Mühldorf am Inn (dpa) - After the attacks on businesses of Turkish origin in the Bavarian Waldkraiburg, a 25-year-old is in pre-trial detention under urgent suspicion.
The man had been arrested at the Mühldorf am Inn train station on Friday evening. In the meantime, an arrest warrant has been issued, said a spokesman for the Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism (ZET) at the Munich Attorney General's Office.
According to the police, the man had not had a ticket and had "explosives" in his luggage. The police said that he was urgently suspected in connection with the Waldkraiburg investigation. The "Bild" newspaper had previously reported. The police announced a press conference in Rosenheim on Sunday morning.
"When checking his luggage, materials were found that could be used to make explosives," said a police spokesman. The police initially did not provide any further information on the man's identity. "The investigation is currently going in all directions."
After the arrest of the man, investigators from the State Criminal Police Office searched two houses in Waldkraiburg and Garching an der Alz. "There was evidence of dangerous items." As a precaution, some residents had to temporarily leave their homes.
Since April one or more unknown persons in Waldkraiburg (district of Mühldorf am Inn) have carried out four attacks on businesses of Turkish origin. Stones flew into the window panes of a snack bar, a restaurant and a hairdressing salon. A Turkish greengrocer's shop went up in flames. Six people were injured in the worst attack on the night of April 27.
According to information from investigative circles, it is therefore investigated, among other things, for property damage, arson and attempted murder. The police had not ruled out an extremist background to the acts.
