Tens of thousands of crew members of hundreds of ships are still trapped on board cruise ships at sea amid the Corona virus epidemic and the focus of the governments of countries around the world to curb the spread of the virus on their soil.
The Associated Press reported in a report today that the governments of various countries took the initiative to evacuate their citizens from the tourists on board these ships, but that their crew members are still detained on board and they are not allowed to leave their narrow rooms only for a short period.
The agency indicated that some of the crew members of these ships were infected with the virus (Covid 19) and were killed as a result, while others are still in good health, but they do not receive their salaries due to the expiration of their contracts.
And the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced last month that about 80,000 crew members were on board their ships off the coast of the United States after most of the tourists were evacuated, while the US Coast Guard confirmed yesterday that 70,000 of those are still stuck on board 102 ships anchored In or near US ports or in US territorial waters.
The agency indicated the difficulty of determining the total number of crew members stranded in their ships worldwide, stressing that thousands of others face similar problems outside the American waters, including off the coast of Uruguay and Manila Bay, where about five thousand people on board 16 ships wait to undergo a corona examination before being allowed to disembark To land at a time when health authorities in various countries of the world are expanding the list of conditions to allow them to leave these ships and return to their countries.
According to official data, infections and deaths from the Corona virus have been recorded on board 20 ships present in the United States waters alone, but most of the ships there are still free of the virus.
