Rescuers discovered the charred remains of at least seven people in the aftermath of an oil tanker fire in a port on Indonesia's Sumatra island, police said on Tuesday, saying they feared the death toll would be higher.

The victims were trapped with dozens of others in the Jag Leela, an Indonesian oil tanker 250 meters under repair, when it caught fire on Monday after several explosions in the port of Belawan, north of Sumatra. The firefighters fought the flames for several hours on another boat in the harbor.

" The dead are among those trapped during the fire. They failed to get out, "said local police spokesman MP Nainggolan. DNA samples were taken to identify the victims, he added. The fire, the cause of which is under investigation, left at least 22 people injured.
