Municipal: the headache of reimbursing campaign costs

If the municipal game were to be fully replayed in September and October in the 4,825 municipalities where no mayor emerged last May, many candidates will claim reimbursement of their campaign costs. In 2014 at the municipal level, 3,879 candidates had declared 94.04 million euros in expenses, of which the State had finally assumed 62.86 million euros, or 16.205 euros per candidate.

For political parties, the subject is both crucial and urgent because the bill is estimated at several million euros. But without knowing the precise conditions of this possible reimbursement, and given the exceptional nature of the situation, the quantification remains complicated, including by the National Commission for Campaign Accounts and Political Financing.
