A slight earthquake measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale occurred off the Syrian coast in the Mediterranean.

The National Seismological Center said in a statement that SANA received a copy of it that the stations of the National Seismic Observatory of the center recorded a slight earthquake at 20:23 km northwest of the city of Latakia in the Mediterranean.

Earthquakes are a natural phenomenon, which is the shaking of the surface of the earth as a result of the movement of tectonic plates in the earth's crust on the faults between the continents. In western Syria, there is a dead sea rift system that passes from the Dead Sea towards part of the Sarghaya, Damascus, Basma, and Masyaf rift and low jungle rift.
