Berlin - Alexander Kekulé is currently one of the most sought-after talk show guests. The pandemic expert, like so many colleagues, has come into focus in the corona crisis. His knowledge is in demand - from television stations as well as from politicians.
But the current easing measures in some federal states do not approve of the virologist. Rather, he describes them as "extremely dangerous."

In mid-March , Kekulé had even advocated a cautious return to everyday life. However, only with adequate preparation of the measures. From the expert's point of view, however, this did not happen. Opening and closing again if it doesn't work is, in his opinion, no solution. The concept cannot bridge the long time until a vaccine is developed. In autumn, Kekulé is also anticipating a further increase in Covid 19 diseases in the northern hemisphere.
That a vaccine is ready by then is utopian, the virologist writes in a guest post in “Zeit”. Even the 18-month estimate is optimistic and not certain. According to him, five out of six vaccine candidates that are currently being clinically tested are based on unknown experimental mechanisms of action. Nevertheless, the virologist is aware of the importance of isolation. Which is why he clearly explains to the British Telegraph that perseverance is not an option.
“We cannot wait for a vaccine and live in lockdown mode for another six to twelve months. If we did that, our society and culture would be destroyed, ”he says.

But what does a good solution look like in the eyes of the virologist? In this regard, Kekulé proposes the "Smart Distancing " principle . Risk groups are particularly protected. This also includes the FFP2 masks normally used in hospitals. The rest of the population should use "folk masks" in public. Burgeoning infections should be followed up consistently. Rapid tests should be available for the entire population.
Kekulé is currently promoting this in numerous talk shows. However, he chooses his appearances carefully. "I only accept invitations when there is something important to say. Right now I'm fighting for a 'people test', ”he explains.
According to another expert, the virus could even go away on its own. He recognizes a pattern.
