St. Anton, St. Anna and Maria Himmelfahrt - all three churches get new bells. On Tuesday, six of a total of ten copies will be cast in Passau. Because of Corona in the presence of fewer eyewitnesses than planned. That should also be the case with the consecration.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Josef Angelbauer is sitting on glowing coals, waiting every minute for the Perner foundry from Passau to call. The phone rings on Friday. Finally the journey can start. On Tuesday at noon the parish church parish priest, pastor Dean Andreas Lackermeier as well as members of the church administration and parish council board their cars and head for the Three Rivers City. To see with your own eyes how the new six bronze bells are cast for St. Anna and Maria Himmelfahrt.

The short trip was planned differently. In a bigger style. They wanted to drive together with the bus. 25 people approximately. "That is impossible," says Lackermeier disappointed. A maximum of ten people are allowed. Otherwise there is not enough space in the foundry to keep the Corona safety distance. "We are very sad," emphasizes the church nurse. "We had already organized everything - with flags and music."

The company made four of the ten bells about four weeks ago. The three for St. Anton and a copy for the Partenkirchner parish church. Very spontaneous. The company called on Monday, and it started on Wednesday. The foundry didn't want to waste any more time. There had been delays due to the Corona crisis. "The most important people are Czechs," Angelbauer explains the problem. And they were stuck behind the border.

Video from Passau

Nobody from the village saw live how the four smaller models were born. Angelbauer sat down in front of the screen to follow the process via conference call. But the technology went on strike. But there should be a video of the appointment on Tuesday. If not everyone is allowed to ride. After all, says the church nurse, watering is “something special”.

A total of ten bells are replaced. Four in the parish church and three each in Wambergs St. Anna and in the pilgrimage church of St. Anton. At the time, after the 2.6-ton ringing in the parish church had broken out of anchorage in 2017, experts from the Archbishop's Ordinariate in Munich had taken a close look at the facilities in the churches and thus sealed the end of the ailing iron models. Only the death bell and the large bronze specimen withstood the examination. The work costs around 360,000 euros, in the course of which the entire belfry in Maria Himmelfahrt and the control system in St. Anna must also be converted. The parish finances the major project through donations and grants.

Corona makes ordination difficult

When the new bells hang in their place, Angelbauer cannot estimate exactly. Forecasts are difficult in times like these. "But we stick to the order," he says. Means: From July onwards, the bells will be installed in St. Anton first. It's the fastest there. because no structural changes to the tower and machinery are necessary. Angelbauer estimates that the whole thing takes eight days. Number two: St. Anna. The bells are silent for two weeks in Germany's highest church. The parish church comes last. Angelbauer calculates there with three weeks for the work.

Before the specialists bring the new models into position, they are consecrated. This was supposed to happen during the patronal feast - on June 13th in St. Anton, on July 26th in Wamberg and on August 15th in Maria Himmelfahrt - with a big party. "This is not possible with Corona," emphasizes Angelbauer. Those responsible ponder, consider how they can accomplish the ordination. At a time when outdoor worship is limited to 50 participants. "We are hanging in the air," says the parish clerk, baffled. The Abbot of Ettal traditionally blesses the bells. This time possibly outside on the church square with "economical participation".

More information

The six new bells will be cast in Passau on Tuesday. It will probably start at 3 p.m. As Pastor Dean Lackermeier announced, the bells of the Church of the Assumption, St. Anton and St. Anna will ring for about five minutes. “For the parishioners, the ringing serves as a hint for this historic moment,” says the priest.
