The end of the suspense is looming. The Scientific Council returned its copy to the Prime Minister on Monday on the advisability of organizing, or not, the second round of the municipal elections during the month of June. It was in the wake of these recommendations that Edouard Philippe decided to invite all the party leaders, this Wednesday at 7 p.m., to discuss with them the polling date.
Everyone can thus express their support or their reservations regarding the dates envisaged. Two options currently hold the rope: either the sanitary conditions allow the second round to be organized at the end of June, or this is not the case and it will then be necessary to reorganize the entire ballot after the summer.
Involve different political forces in the final decision
It is the first time since the start of confinement that the leaders of both the majority and the opposition have been invited to a physical meeting in Matignon. The email they received this Monday afternoon specifies that the meeting should last approximately two hours.
This meeting will be a way for the executive to associate the different political forces with the final decision concerning the date of the second round. And thus avoid the critics who had surrounded his decision to maintain the first round, on March 15, despite the coronavirus crisis.
