On May 9, the ship's movement abruptly stopped Iran's bustling and unexplained Shahid Rajai port. The computers that regulate the flow of ships, trucks and goods crashed. Iranian officials have confirmed that a foreign hacker is behind the operation. Now, more than a week later, the Washington Post reports that, according to the U.S. and foreign government officials, the port has been the victim of a significant cyber-attack and a responsible rise in Israel.

According to the publications, the cyber attack has disrupted traffic along the port for days, apparently by Israel, in retaliation for the attempt by Iranians first to penetrate computers running water distribution systems in Israel. A foreign security official called the attack "highly accurate" and said the damage to the Iranian port was more severe than described by official Iranian sources. "There was complete disarray."

On May 8, Iranian attempt at cyber attack on infrastructure in Israel was reported. Officials said hackers wanted to compromise computers that control water flow and wastewater treatment in Israel, and take control of a system that regulates the addition of chlorine and other chemicals to water. The breach was discovered and thwarted before significant damage was done. The Israeli Water Authority discovered the experience and immediately took measures, including changing system passwords.

"Assuming that this is true, it is in line with Israeli policy to respond aggressively to Iranian provocation, either kinetically or by other means," said Dmitry Alfrovich, cyber security expert at the Harvard Belfer Center. "Israel is bombing these weapons aggregates. They now seem to have implemented the doctrine in cyberspace."
