The Saharan cheetah, an endangered species, has once again reappeared in the Ahaggar cultural park, in the Tamanrasset region, in the far south of Algeria, according to the management of the Algerian cultural parks.
This feline had been missing for over ten years. It was recently observed by scientific teams from the Office of the Ahaggar Cultural Park (Onpca), 2,000 km south of Algiers, said a park official, Salah Amokrane, quoted by the agency on Monday. official APS press.
Mr. Amokrane was speaking during the presentation of a short documentary film on scientific research missions and images of the cheetah taken in the Atakor, in the heart of Ahaggar Park, the second largest park National of Algeria.
The Saharan cheetah, native to the Sahara Desert and the Sahel, is included on the red list of endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
In 2012, IUCN feline specialists estimated their number at 37 in Algeria.
