Washington (dpa) - Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, according to scientists, more than 90,000 people have died in the USA after being infected with the virus. This emerged on Monday evening from data from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

According to the university, the number of confirmed infections in the USA was more than 1.5 million. More than 4.7 million cases are known worldwide.

Just a few weeks ago, the IHME Institute at the University of Washington in Seattle assumed that the number of victims would stabilize at around 90,000 in midsummer. Meanwhile, the scientists assume that the number of deaths in the United States could rise to around 110,000 by the end of the month. Only at the end of July could the number of victims stabilize at around 145,000.

The model is constantly updated - also because containment measures are loosening in many places in the USA. The government of US President Donald Trump has used the IHME model several times for its own forecasts.

The researchers' website at Johns Hopkins University is updated regularly with incoming data and therefore shows a higher level of confirmed infections than the official figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US health agency CDC. In some cases, however, the university's figures have recently been revised downwards.
