Yukos case: Russian vodka seized to make Moscow pay

2020-05-19T15:32:10.531Z

To compensate the ex-shareholders of the oil company Yukos, the Netherlands seized the assets of Stolichnaya and Moskovskaya, two brands of Russian vodka.

Vodka seized as an asset belonging to the Russian state to force him to pay compensation ordered by the courts. The situation is so cliché that you would think it was a joke. But this story is the last episode in a fifteen-year-old legal saga. It opposes the majority shareholders of the oil company Yukos, butchered after the arrest of its founder Mikhail Khodorkovsky, against the Russian Federation.

The former partners of the oligarch, a handful of Russian businessmen in exile, obtained, on February 18, before a Dutch court of appeal, the confirmation of an historic arbitration award by its magnitude . This judgment condemns Russia to compensate them up to the colossal sum of 50 billion dollars for illegal expropriation. The compensation was even increased to $ 57 billion, thanks to new penalties.
