Hope for border opening despite Corona crisis - but Spain remains cautious

The government has just put a damper on burgeoning hopes of an early border opening for tourists. "I hope that we can resume tourist activities at the end of June ," said José Luis Ábalos, Minister of Transport, on Monday. Previously, Germans who had a second home on Mallorca, among other things, had complained about the applicable entry restrictions.

"We cannot allow foreigners to enter while we still block the Spanish population ," he said. Hopes had arisen after Italy, which was also hit hard by the Corona crisis , announced the opening of the border for tourists from June 3 . In Germany, the worldwide travel warning currently applies until June 15th. After that, it will probably not be extended in this form. Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas already indicated on Twitter that the warning for European countries should be lifted earlier than for other travel destinations.

For Europe, it will certainly be possible to remove the #travel warning earlier than for other travel destinations - provided that the positive trend continues in many countries. I will invite you to a neighborhood dialogue to agree on the next steps. #COVID ー 19
