A 16-year-old girl, who confessed to having thrown her newborn baby out of the window, was indicted in Nîmes on Thursday for " violence resulting in death without intention to give it," AFP learned from a source close to the folder. The girl, who declared in police custody that she did not know she was pregnant, was placed under judicial supervision, said this source, confirming information from Midi Libre.

She gave birth alone last Friday at the home of relatives in a small village in the Cévennes, north of Alès. The newborn's lifeless body was discovered the same day by a neighbor.

The teenager said later in the day, while she was at the Alès hospital center for treatment, that she threw the baby out the window, said Alès’s attorney, François Schneider. An investigation for "homicide on a minor under 15 years of age" was then opened.

The autopsy carried out at the forensic institute of the CHU of Nîmes proved that the baby was alive at birth. It is now the Nîmes court which is competent to hear this case, because the young woman is a minor and it is a criminal case.
