Augsburg (dpa) - Doctors at the Augsburg University Hospital have consistently found "unusually severe, sometimes presumably irreversible" damage to the lung tissue during the autopsy of deceased corona patients.

The university clinic said on Friday that they were apparently not caused by ventilation, but rather directly caused by the virus. The medical team sees the change as the cause of death.

The team autopsied 19 dead. The results of the first ten autopsies are described in the "Journal of the American Medical Association" ("Jama"). The people had an average age of 79 years. "All patients suffered from serious underlying diseases, which did not lead directly to death," said Professor Bruno Märkl, director of pathology at the university hospital. No apparently serious changes were found in the other organs.

In Berlin, at least eleven Covid-19 deaths had previously been autopsied. This emerges from a response published last week by the Senate Department for Health to a parliamentary question from left-wing MP Wolfgang Albers. Blood poisoning in pneumonia (four cases), lung failure (three cases) and heart failure (two cases) were the most common causes of death. In all eleven cases, the Charité Institute of Pathology determined that the causes of death were "causally caused by Covid-19", it said.
