(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 22 - Sapienza University joins the initiative of the Falcone Foundation to commemorate the victims of the mafia massacres of Capaci and via D'Amelio on their 28th anniversary, in collaboration with student associations.
The University invites you to participate in the flash mob organized throughout Italy by hanging a sheet or white cloth on the window or balcony on Saturday 23 May at 18 and sharing the photo via social channels: a gesture that recalls the strong reaction that shook Palermo in the aftermath of the 1992 attacks and is proposed as a sign of unity in contrasting all forms of organized crime.
On the occasion of the commemorative day, the Rector, together with a small delegation of students, will symbolically bring the University's homage to the tree of legality, the maple that Sapienza planted a year ago, on May 23, 2019, in the square of the Marco Polo building, dedicated to the judges Falcone and Borsellino. The sheet expresses gratitude to all those who, in the fight against the mafia, or in the battle against the pandemic, choose to do their part for the country.
The event commemorating the mafia massacres of '92 is promoted since 2002 by the Ministry of Education and the Falcone Foundation and is part of a path promoted to encourage educational activities in schools aimed at the culture of respect and legality and for an active and responsible citizenship . #PalermoChiamaItalia has been created over the years also thanks to the effective and daily collaboration provided by the State Police, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza. The event in recent years has been enriched with important contributions thanks to the agreements signed with the National Anti-Corruption Authority (ANAC), the National Anti-Mafia and Counter-Terrorism Prosecutor, the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSM), the National Association of Magistrates (ANM) .
Furthermore, for tomorrow the Conference of Rectors of the Sicilian Universities (CRUS) in consultation with the Students' Representation of the four Sicilian Universities and the CRUI, convene at 10:30 a telematic OPEN SESSION of its assembly on the occasion of the anniversary of the massacre of Capaci, in which Giovanni Falcone, Francesca Morvillo and the agents of their escort were killed. To help students and university teachers to make their voices heard loud and strong, many personalities from the world of institutions will give their testimony.
For the first time the institutional assembly of the four universities of Sicily, fully represented by students and teachers, opens not only to the reference territories, families, the world of work, civil society, the judiciary, the police , to the authorities, to the Sicilians, but to the whole country. This is to demonstrate to them the firm will of the university system to reaffirm a conviction: every educational and training process must aim at developing a critical awareness of the younger generations, determined to support every action aimed at fighting and defeating any Mafia activity or organization, without reservations and without hesitation.
"If the mafia, as Falcone argued, is a criminal organization that, like any other, will sooner or later have an end - said Giovanni Puglisi, President of the Conference of Sicilian Rectors and Rector of Enna - then the university's commitment Sicilian, of the whole Italian university, is making sure that its end is as close as possible, promoting the ever wider and more convinced growth of civil conscience against any form of mafia crime ".
Speakers during the event: Gaetano Manfredi (Minister of University and Research), Pietro Grasso (former President of the Senate), Nello Musumeci (President of the Sicilian Region), Giovanni Grasso (Spokesman of the President of the Republic), Salvatore Gristina (President of the Sicilian Episcopal Conference and Archbishop of Catania), Salvatore Di Vitale (President of the Court of Palermo), Franco Lo Voi (Chief Prosecutor of Palermo), Giusi Scaduto (Prefect of Syracuse), Teo Luzi (Chief of Staff of the Arma dei Carabinieri), Massimo Bray (Director General of Treccani and former Minister of Cultural Heritage), Renato Cortese (Quaestor of Palermo), Salvatore Cardinale (emeritus President of the Court of Appeal of Caltanissetta), Ferruccio Resta (President of CRUI and Rector of the Polytechnic of Milan), Domenico Surdi (Mayor of Alcamo), Maria Falcone (President of the Giovanni Falcone Foundation), Marcello Sorgi (La Stampa columnist). They will be joined by representatives of civil society who, together with the Rectors Salvatore Cuzzocrea, Fabrizio Micari and Francesco Priolo, and the student representatives, will give an exemplary demonstration of the strength of the free and honest choir of women and men against any mafia organization. The debate will start from the memory of Giovanni Falcone, Francesca Morvillo, and of all the heroes who gave their lives to protect and guarantee the fundamental freedoms of citizens.
