Izmir: Prosecutor opens investigation into hackers

Turkish religious affairs agency, Diyanet, confirmed the incident on Wednesday night via Twitter. A complaint to the police has already been filed. The Izmir public prosecutor's office launched an investigation into the unknown hackers and social network users who shared the action. According to the state news agency Anadolu, they are accused of "slandering religious values".

Ömer Celik, spokesman for the ruling AKP party of the Islamic conservative President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also condemned the incident. The authors of this "hideous act" would be found, he assured.

Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey, is considered secular and a stronghold of the opposition party CHP.
