Coronavirus: more than 2 million cases reported in Europe

More than 2 million cases of the new coronavirus have been officially declared in Europe, including almost two thirds in Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and France, according to a count made by AFP from sources official Saturday at 4:00 p.m. GMT.

With at least 2,001,995 cases, for 173,133 deaths, Europe is the continent most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. A total of 5,244,616 cases worldwide, including 339,011 deaths, have been identified.

Russia is the European country with the highest number of cases (335,882 for 3,388 deaths) with a daily increase of around 10,000 new cases reported since the beginning of May. The United Kingdom (257,154 cases, 36,675 deaths), Spain (234,824, 28,628), Italy (229,327, 32,735) and France (182,219, 28,289) are the four other European countries officially counting more than 180,000 cases their territory.

This number of diagnosed cases only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries testing only serious cases.
