More than 5,250,000 cases of the new coronavirus have been officially declared worldwide, including more than two thirds in Europe and the United States, according to a count made by AFP from official sources on Saturday at 4:50 p.m. GMT.

At least 5,250,658 cases of infection, among which 339,172 deaths, have been recorded, in particular in Europe, the continent most affected with 2,003,510 cases and 173,186 deaths, and in the United States (1,604,879 cases, including 96,125 deaths ). The number of cases reported worldwide has doubled in one month and more than 250,000 new cases have been registered in less than three days.
The number of cases diagnosed reflects only a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries testing only serious cases or lacking screening capacity.
