Coronavirus: the end of a long tunnel for culture

2020-05-28T19:58:32.347Z

The reopening of museums and monuments as well as theaters and performance halls remains based on a "logic of trust".

A “ gradual return to cultural life” , based on a “logic of trust” : the culture sector which, along with that of luxury and tourism, forms a key whole for the economy and the attractiveness of the country, will be able to raise your head. Throughout the territory, museums and monuments will be able to reopen their doors from June 2, with the condition of wearing a mandatory mask by the reception staff and by visitors.

Until then, only small establishments, whose public came from the surroundings, had resumed an activity. They had done so in dispersed order, but the abolition of the 100 km rule should allow them to return to honorable attendance. The Louvre, the Center Pompidou, the Musée d'Orsay and the great flagships can also make a reappearance, provided that they develop an organization for agents and for welcoming the public.

As for theaters and theaters, which were impatient as their finances are in jeopardy, it is the exit from the tunnel (apart from those located in Île-de-France, Oise and Mayotte, which will open only on June 22). In almost the whole country, " if some (producers) can reopen, let them do it " with health rules, the Prime Minister stressed, establishing with them a sort of pact of confidence.

A crucial recovery

But " the adversary " is still there, hammered Édouard Philippe. Large gatherings, festivals or concerts, whether in covered spaces or outdoors, will always be limited to 5,000 people - a figure subject to revision by the prefects, in the event of a breach of security. Thanks to this, the live performance should limit the damage, even if many festivals, like that of Avignon or the Arles meetings, have already announced that they will cancel, and will probably not have time to recover in the saddle. And even if the big national theaters, like that of Strasbourg or the Criée in Marseille, have already finished their season. No matter: even partially, recovery is crucial. According to a study carried out by the EY firm on behalf of producers of shows, festivals and hall owners, the loss of turnover is estimated at 1.8 billion euros, and tens of thousands of jobs are threat.

As for the 2,000 cinemas in France, which thought they had authorization to open on July 1, they have just won a week of operation. " At the request of the operators, " said the Prime Minister, all the dark rooms will be able to operate again from June 22. They will undoubtedly do it all on Wednesday June 24, so as to be able to assure the films an exit on a maximum of screens. Professionals are confident that spectators will return.

People are thirsty for something else after spending more than two months on the platforms. As in the past with television, cassettes and DVDs ”, judges Jocelyn Bouyssy, CEO of the CGR group (702 cinemas and 25 million viewers per year).
