Chile reported 49 deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours on Thursday, the highest daily number since the start of the pandemic, which now totals almost 87,000 infections and 890 deaths in total.

The Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich, reported at the Palacio de La Moneda that on the last day , 4,654 new cases were registered, for a total of 86,943 infections . Among those infected, the official highlighted that 3,707 are health workers.

On the other hand, the patients admitted to intensive care amounted to 1,286, with 1,079 connected to mechanical respiration.

86% of the critical beds nationwide are occupied, while in the Metropolitan Region the number rises to 93%, the minister explained.

Mechanical respirators are one of the Chilean Government's biggest concerns . According to figures revealed by Mañalich, the current availability is 346 teams in the integrated health network, although "64 new ventilators will arrive in our country during the night."

Chile registered its first case of coronavirus on March 3 and on the 18 of that month a state of constitutional emergency of catastrophe was decreed for 90 days, which implies the closure of borders, sanitary cords, traffic restrictions, application of quarantines and touches of remains.
