Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet and Coupé, focus on electrification

2020-05-28T17:04:00.163Z

NEW - After the sedan and the station wagon, it's the E-Class “pleasure” derivatives to sacrifice for the mid-career update.

A blow of comb here, a blow of blush there: the coupés and convertibles Class E satisfy, a few months after the sedan and the station wagon, the traditional restyling of living environment. The aesthetic changes are minor and are based on the adoption of flattened LED spotlights, more aggressive shields and an inverted grille. At the back, the designers have touched up the interior of the LED lights. As is customary in such circumstances, these E-Class body shapes welcome new body colors and new rim designs designed to be more aerodynamic and reduce fuel consumption.

The interior has also been screened and we note the adoption of the steering wheel of the sedan with a sportier design and allowing the detection of the driver's hands for the autonomous driving system. The ergonomics have been reviewed. To navigate the central digital screen, Mercedes installed the latest generation of its touchpad. The MBUX system can be controlled in three ways: from the capacitive buttons on the steering wheel, by touching the touch screen or using voice control.

The most important developments concern the electrification of motors. For the French market, the offer has been simplified and the range only includes four engines, two diesels and two petrol. The 220d welcomes a new generation of the 2-liter turbo diesel 4-cylinder. Benefiting from an injection pressure of 2,700 bars, this unit is fitted with an alternator-starter (ISG) now placed in the 9-speed automatic gearbox and powered by a 48 V on-board network. This engine announces a power of 195 hp, a torque of 400 Nm for a consumption of 4.7 l / 100 km, or CO2 emissions of 123 g / km. The second 400d diesel version is powered by a 6-cylinder in-line 3-liter engine delivering 340 hp and 700 Nm of torque. CO2 emissions are certified at 165 g / km.

The petrol engine range is based on the 4-cylinder direct injection of E300 gasoline with light hybridization EQ Boost delivering 258 hp. This version claims a standardized consumption of 6.7 l / 100 km, or CO2 emissions of 153 g / km. An AMG 53+ 4Matic version oversees the range. Its 6-cylinder in-line 3 liter biturbo with 435 hp also incorporates a light 48 V hybridization.
