LE FIGARO. - The April unemployment figures are catastrophic. Is the dreaded tsunami here?
Muriel PÉNICAUD. -In fact, it was the largest monthly increase since the creation of the statistical series in 1996. We expected a bad figure, activity having slowed down in April, but the increase is very high and shows the violence of the crisis. And this even if, thanks to the partial unemployment scheme that we have deployed, there is not a wave of massive layoffs in entries to Pôle Emploi. This result is the consequence of the collapse of exits from unemployment, notably because of the cessation of hiring, and the transfer from categories B and C (reduced activity) to category A. This is the case for the missions of 'interim and part-time CDD which have not been renewed. I note that the job offers of companies, which plunged during the confinement, went up again in May: 459,000 are available on the Pôle emploi website.
