The Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic has a new laboratory. Corona tests can be analyzed there. The result is quickly available.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen - The heart of the new laboratory is a “real-time PCR system”. Next to it are an incubator, a centrifuge, a computer, a safety workbench and two freezers. We are in the "realm" of Dr. Liliana Harris Mochmann. The biochemist has been analyzing corona tests at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen hospital since Monday. Your job consists of a lot of manual work.

Old contacts help

"The laboratory was set up in less than three weeks," says Mochmann, who previously worked at the Charité in Berlin, at the press meeting. The initiative was from private lecturer Dr. Clemens Stockklausner, head doctor of pediatric and adolescent medicine in the clinic. He let old contacts with the Heidelberg University Hospital play. The "Real-Time PCR System", which was previously used in pediatric oncology, is not used there. The device is on loan, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic can use it free of charge. According to Managing Director Bernward Schröter, there are considerations to buy it from Heidelberg University Hospital.

No waiting time

In the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic, a corona test is carried out for every patient who is admitted to the hospital. The advantage of the new laboratory is obvious: The clinic can examine the smears immediately. The result is available within four to six hours. The clinic does not have to wait for days until laboratories that analyze tests in Innsbruck and Munich deliver results. Schröter emphasizes the "high quality and speed" of his own laboratory. Biochemist Mochmann only evaluates tests that are carried out in the clinic. 40 analyzes per day are possible.

Minimize risks

“We don't want anyone to be a danger. We want to do everything humanly possible so that nobody gets infected, ”emphasizes Stockklausner. The specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine with a focus on neonatology, pediatric hematology and oncology makes it clear that the hospital had tested every inpatient for Covid-19 weeks before the general decision.

Specialists wanted

Despite its own, the clinic still relies on other laboratories. This is partly due to the manpower. "We need more people who can do this," says Stockklausner. Mochmann is only involved in the analyzes for half a day. The clinic is looking for a biological-technical assistant or a chemical-technical assistant to add personnel to the laboratory.

Safety precautions

It is a so-called S2 laboratory. This means that certain safety precautions are necessary. An example: There is a yellow waste container in the laboratory. It contains "biological hazardous substances", explains Stockklausner. The garbage can therefore not be disposed of conventionally, but must be incinerated.
