Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned today that US measures in the field of arms control have become more dangerous and unpredictable, in the wake of US media reports that Washington is studying the possibility of resuming nuclear tests.
"Russia does not exclude that the United States is preparing the ground for withdrawal from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty," Spartnik quoted Zakharova as telling reporters today.
She pointed out that Washington has a well-known pattern in filing charges, including through false stories and leaks, and then paving the way for taking specific steps to pursue its goals, adding that “Russia, for its part, will not give up the moratorium on nuclear weapons testing as long as the other signatory states to the agreement adhere to it. ”
The Russian spokeswoman noted that "there is still uncertainty about the actions of the United States regarding the extension of the Convention on the Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Weapons."
On the other hand, Zakharova condemned Washington's decision to cancel exemptions from US sanctions that benefit some foreign companies working on nuclear projects in Iran, noting that the international community has long urged Washington to return to its obligations under these documents in a reference to the nuclear agreement with Iran.
Zakharova confirmed that the Russian side is monitoring "the steadfast hostility of the American political elite towards Iran."
In May last year, US President Donald Trump announced his country’s withdrawal from the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and the five plus one group in 2015 and the re-establishment of sanctions against Tehran.
