Mineral oils that can cause cancer have been found in various baby milk powder products. The federal government already knew about the results before the laboratory results were published.

  • Under investigation were baby - milk powder products from  Nestle and Co.
  • There were mineral found that cancer can trigger
  • The federal government knew about this before it was published

Kassel - In October of last year, Foodwatch published a laboratory test that showed that carcinogenic mineral oils were found in milk powder products for babies . The manufacturers Nestlé and Novalac were mentioned in this context . The oil pollution has now been confirmed by state investigations. Foodwatch had requested the publication of the test results via the Consumer Protection Act.

Baby milk powder from Nestlé and Co. tested: mineral oils that can cause cancer found

The result was surprising: Saturated mineral oils (MOSH) were found in all 50 samples examined, which were examined by the Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office in Münster (CVUA ). 14 of the samples tested contained the particularly dangerous aromatic mineral oils (MOAH), which according to the European Food Authority (EFSA) are suspected of causing cancer and damaging the genome.

Overall, 92 percent of the samples were contaminated with MOSH and 21 percent of the samples with MOAH (carcinogenic mineral oils). According to scientific assessment, aromatized mineral oils (MOAH) should not be found in the smallest quantities due to their dangerous nature in food . Likewise, saturated mineral oils (MOSH) should be avoided as much as possible because they accumulate in tissues and organs. The exact effects are still unclear here.

Baby milk powder from Nestlé and Co.: Mineral oils that can cause cancer have been found in these products

Researchers at the Münster Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office (CVUA) found aromatic mineral oils that can cause cancer in the following products: Nestlé

  • "BEBA Pro HA 2"
  • "BEBA Supreme Pre, from birth"
  • "BEBA Optipro 2"
  • "BEBA Optipro 1"
  • "BEBA Pro HA 1, from birth"
  • "BEBA Pro HA Pre"

Novalac

  • "Baby milk food PRE 400g"
  • "BK, flatulence and colic"

Humana

  • "SL special food for cow's milk intolerance"
  • "Starting milk 1 from birth"

Rossmann

  • Babydream "Children's drink from 1 year"

It is currently unclear whether the affected batches of milk powder are still on the market. It is also not known whether the manufacturers' products are now unencumbered.

Baby milk powder from Nestlé: The federal government knew about products that contain carcinogenic mineral oils

When the results of the Foodwatch investigations were published last year, Federal Food Minister Julia Klöckner also spoke up . In a press release, she said: "If it turns out that baby or infant milk could harm the health of our little ones, it must not end up in the supermarket." The results of the second investigation have now been confirmed.

Since this study is government research, the Federal Environment Minister had the results available to Foodwatch before publication. At that time, the Federal Ministry of Food, at the request of Foodwatch, announced that  Nestlé Germany could not find any aromatic mineral oils, that is, mineral oils that can cause cancer, during “self-monitoring examinations”. This has now been refuted. It is questionable whether measures have been taken by the government or whether these will now be brought about by publishing the test results.
