US President Trump said on May 30 that because of the introduction of the National Security Act in Hong Kong by China, the United States will abolish the policy of special treatment for Hong Kong and sanction Chinese and Hong Kong officials who are involved in weakening Hong Kong ’s autonomy.
Secretary of State Pompeo then posted on his personal Twitter that the CCP is smashing the characteristics of Hong Kong that are different from other parts of China. President Trump believes that Hong Kong should no longer be treated as usual. Pompeo said the United States will defend itself from the tyranny of the CCP.
China's "People's Daily" criticized the US sanctions as destined to be in vain, unable to prevent Hong Kong from integrating into the overall situation of national development. The newspaper commented that the United States has repeatedly intervened in an attempt to use the Hong Kong model to change the social system in mainland China, exposing them to use Hong Kong as a bridgehead to split, subvert, infiltrate and destroy the mainland of China. The comment said that the National People's Congress decided to enact relevant laws and block national security loopholes.
