(CNN) - Nick Cannon explains why he felt he should go to Minneapolis and join the protests against George Floyd's death.

The actor and musician discussed his decision in an article published on Variety.

"I needed to see the people in that community: how much love they had for their community and its people and how much pain this has caused," Cannon wrote. “We feel that the pain is spreading throughout the world: anger and pain. Those images will never be erased from our minds, "he added.

"What we need is a new normality, a new paradigm. I want us to focus on our humanity and dismantle racist systems that we don't need, that perpetuate crimes of inequality and oppress communities of color across our country. We have to dismantle all the systems on which this country was built, ”Cannon wrote.

He also said that his own children, also children of Mariah Carey, fear the Police.

"If we are going to talk about what the solutions are, there has to be a complete overhaul not just of a Police Department but of the Police in general," Cannon wrote. "I think it would start by removing the word 'police.' Why be a police officer when you can be a peace officer? When you see a police officer, you are supposed to feel safe. They are supposed to protect you. My children are afraid of the police officers. In their minds, they are the bad guys, ”he explained.

However, Cannon wrote that he sees a path to progress.

"I am finding signs of hope in the mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul," he wrote. “Seeing them respond immediately with care and compassion was the right thing. I saw a lot of pain and disappointment in his law enforcement. Being at 38th and Chicago and seeing people cry at the monument was more disappointing than anything else. They did not think that something like this could happen in Minneapolis. But it happened. This is what the United States is. If it could happen in Minneapolis, it can happen in Georgia and in Los Angeles and in New York, "he added.
