The young man had gone to the landslide area near Hinterstein near Bad Hindelang in the Upper Allgäu with a friend to go bouldering. This involves free-hand climbing on low rocks, and a mat that you bring with you to place under the rocks is to prevent injuries in the event of a fall.

Mountain accident in the Allgäu: "The pain must have been incredible"

The house-high boulders near Hinterstein come from a rock fall that occurred in 1964, and since then the rocks have gradually slid down the mountain. "With over 670 individual problems climbed in almost all levels of difficulty from 'suitable for beginners' to Fb 8b, the block field is one of the bouldering spots with the most boulder problems in the Alpine region", says the site on the bouldering homepage blocheart.de .

When the Swabian clung to the huge rock while climbing, a piece weighing two tons suddenly broke off the main rock and pinched his leg. "The rock must have been loosened by frost and just held its position," believes a spokesman for the Sonthofen fire department

"The guy might have weighed 70 kilos, but that was enough for the chunk to come loose." The rock pinched the climber's ankle, no chance of getting out. "The pain must have been incredible," thinks the firefighter.

Only at the beginning of May did a tragic mountain accident occur near the Upper Bavarian Schliersee. A family man (61) lost his life. A mountaineer also died on the Zugspitze in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. His body was only recovered on Wednesday.

Boulder accident in Bavaria: 70 rescue workers and a helicopter in action

The climber's companion called for help: the Hinterstein mountain rescue team went out with 16 men, and the fire departments in Hinterstein, Bad Hindelang and Sonthofen were also alerted. A total of 70 rescue and police forces were deployed.

The accident site is difficult to reach on foot due to the landslide. The fire department Hinterstein brought a 40 Ki lo heavy Greifzug with - a kind of rope, with which one can lift 1.5 tonnes by hand. It wasn't really enough to move the rock. "The men on site then helped with muscle strength until the rock moved a few centimeters so that the man could be released."

An emergency doctor looked after the victim on site. The climber had to endure more than an hour in his predicament until a helicopter lifted him on board by mountain rope and could fly to the Kempten Clinic for treatment. According to the police, the man suffered a complicated ankle fracture.
