The general elections in Bolivia, postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, will take place on September 6, the president of the electoral authority, Salvador Romero, announced on Tuesday after an agreement between the parties.

The Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) will send a bill to Parliament which " provides for the holding of general elections on September 6, " he said of the poll originally scheduled for May 3 to try to get the Bolivia from the political crisis. Bolivia has been ruled for several months by Jeanine Añez, a right-wing senator who became interim president after the resignation and flight from the country in November 2019 of the socialist president Evo Morales, who now lives in exile in Argentina.
The Evo Morales MAS has a large majority in each of the two chambers of Parliament. In power since 2006, the former socialist president had declared himself victorious in the presidential election of October 20 for a fourth term, but the opposition had cried fraud. After weeks of demonstrations, released by the police and the army, he resigned on November 10 and left Bolivia.

The Andean country of 11 million inhabitants has so far recorded more than 10,000 cases of Covid-19 contamination and more than 300 deaths, figures which are clearly increasing. Economic activity has restarted since Monday in several major cities of Bolivia.
