Summer 2018 was exceptionally hot. But it could be even more violent in 2019, my weather experts - we may be facing an extreme summer.

Update from September 19, 2019 : Summer 2019 has just ended, when an expert speaks of a "shock forecast" for the next winter. The fact that it is still very mild before winter also has to do with the ex-tropical storm Sebastien.

Update from August 6, 2019: A thunderstorm super cell is currently moving over Bavaria - the weather service expressly warns. The current weather forecasts for Germany show whether there is any hope of a summer comeback in the near future.

Update from July 2, 2019: June 2019 was the hottest June ever, considering the weather worldwide. This comes from data released on Tuesday by the EU-run Copernicus service for monitoring climate change. The global temperatures in June 2019 were 0.1 degrees above the previous record holder, June 2016.

Update from July 1, 2019: The fears of the weather experts seem to be confirmed. June says goodbye to Germany with two record values. Storms now threaten in Bavaria. (Merkur.de *)

Weather: "Disaster" summer threatens - experts fear extreme heat for 2019

Update from May 26, 2019: Summer 2019 is getting closer - and it could be extreme. This fear already existed a few months ago (see below). And it continues to exist. Even drier, even hotter, extreme forest fire risk in Germany? This is the worst scenario. Jörg Kachelmann is currently warning of a weather myth that he believes is "inhumane".

"The heat horror" is imminent next summer, writes bild.de, thus depicting a long-term forecast by the US private weather service Accuweather.

How does a German weather expert rate it? "There are always tight heat waves all over Europe, significantly more than in 2018. The temperatures reach 38 to 40 degrees as peak values. Values of around 43 degrees are even announced in Spain and Portugal, ”says meteorologist Dominik Jung from wetter.net.

According to the DWD, 2018 was the hottest year since records began.

After all: forecasts do not always have to be correct. According to the report, the US state weather service NOAA has corrected its original forecast after May.

With regard to a possible extreme summer 2019, Dominik Jung says: “Let's hope that Accuweather's current summer forecast will not come true. That would really be a real disaster. "

Meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann thinks little about breaking out into hysteria when it comes to climate and considers the heat to be less problematic. Something else worries him a lot more.

On hot and humid days, violent thunderstorms and sudden drops in temperature follow. Experts sound the alarm: extreme weather conditions are a serious burden on our bodies.

At the start of the week it gets really hot in parts of Germany: The German Weather Service (DWD) expects up to 35 degrees. In addition, violent thunderstorms threaten.

In the meantime, many hut owners in the Alps have to postpone their start of the season due to the snow masses. The Alpine Club expressly warns of tours in the high mountains, reports Merkur.de *. Currently, satellite images from the Arctic Circle are causing a sensation: A huge fire is burning in the Arctic, which could have fatal consequences for the climate.

Weather experts sound the alarm: 2019 is threatening an extreme summer with record temperatures

Our article from March 30th, 2019:

Cologne - The sunny, spring-like days of the past few weeks have already given a little foretaste of what could await us again this summer. The official start of summer is only on June 1st, but weather experts are already making the first cautious forecasts.

Video: tornado over Bavaria

TV meteorologist Karsten Schwanke (50), for example, explained to the time that the coming summer may not necessarily be as hot as the last one. According to research results from Great Britain, the likelihood of this is quite given.

Weather in summer 2018 - extreme temperatures

They examined the record summer of 2018 and how likely it would be to experience such summers more often in the future.

Reminder: 2018 was extreme. "It has never been so warm (10.5 degrees Celsius) and sunny (2,015 hours) on average since the beginning of the measurement recordings as last year", Schwanke explains the evaluations of the German Weather Service (DWD). Likewise, there has never been such a dry summer, rain hardly ever fell.

Not only Germany groaned under the heat, all of Europe was affected. The British researchers found that at the beginning of the last century the probability of such a summer was 1: 245. Such a century summer could have occurred every 245 years. "Today, after just one degree Celsius of global warming, this statistical probability has increased to 1: 8 - a statistically probable occurrence every eight years!" Summarizes Schwanke the results.

Weather: "Long-term forecasting is still in its infancy"

If global warming continues, we will face record temperatures like this every two years in 2050. However, there are still no concrete forecasts for summer 2019, as weather forecasts for months in advance are still not possible. “The only viable long-term forecast that I know of is that the Indian and British Meteorological Service will predict the arrival of the Indian summer monsoon. Long-term forecasting is still in its infancy here in Europe, ”said Schwanke.

Weather expert Machalica also raises the alarm

Another weather expert is now sounding the alarm. The reason: twelve "too warm" months in a row. From April 2018 to March 2019 inclusive, all months in Germany were significantly too warm compared to the long-term average, reports Wetter.com. The deviations are between 1 and 5 degrees. Particularly noteworthy was last April, which peaked at just under 30 degrees and was the warmest Easter month since 1881.

To determine the current climate in more detail, a reference period of 30 years is specified in meteorology. From 1961 to 1990 "the average annual temperature was 8.2 degrees," explains meteorologist Andreas Machalica from Wetter.com. "We expect around 9.2 degrees for the period 1991 to 2020", Machalica continues. According to the expert, the average annual temperature rises by 1 degree Celsius. That would be a very big leap compared to the past deviations of just 0.1 degrees. "So we are right in the middle of climate change," Machalica clarifies. “While many still remember last year's hot summer, it is April in particular that has achieved several heat records in recent years. The last cold April was in 2001. "
