They are still at school and are already Formula 1 champions: Four boys from the Graf-Rasso-Gymnasium have won the title at the Bavarian Formula 1 Championships at the school for the second time in a row.

Fürstenfeldbruck - In 2019 Philipp Gettert, Jakob Lambertz, Benedikt Tubes and Levi Voigt from the "Racing Eagles" won the title live with presentation and in direct competition. This year, “Formula 1 at school” had to be moved to the Internet because of the corona crisis. The four are still proud. "Of course it feels different when you can cheer and celebrate live together," says Lambertz, responsible for graphic design and sponsorship at the "Racing Eagles". But that doesn't change the fact that you are doing a great job as a team. "And we had a lot of fun with the competition," added the 14-year-old student.

"Formula 1 at school" takes place as part of a mandatory mint elective course. "Mint" stands for the first letters of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology and is supported among other things by business associations. It is multidisciplinary. It's not just about creating a model that is as fast as possible and that is sent over a 20-meter race track. The type of manufacture and construction are also included in the evaluation - just as a team presents itself in the areas of marketing, sponsorship and appearance. That is why the quartet also discussed in detail about the logo and color and their external impact.

The project was worked on for five months

It took five months from the first meeting to the complete assembly of the model vehicle. Details such as the weight, the aerodynamics of the chassis or the arrangement and shape of the spoilers had to be taken into account. In addition, the portfolio that served as the overall presentation of the "Racing Eagle" also says about the tires: "They are small and closed so that no turbulence can arise." can. In addition, care had to be taken to ensure that no naming rights in Formula 1 were violated.

It was helpful for the students that the Wilhelm Stemmer Foundation - one of the quartet's main sponsors - financed the school's own racetrack a few years ago. “This gave us the luxury of being able to test our vehicles directly,” says Lambertz. In addition, the Graf-Rasso-Gymnasium provided rooms for the team meetings and computers. Because the four did not come from the same class, it was sometimes not so easy to make appointments.

The team is fully motivated for the German championship

After winning the Bavarian Championship, the quartet can take a deep breath. But there are still tasks. "I have decided to keep our sponsors up to date," said Voigt. And getters like Tubes say that they would familiarize themselves better and better with special computer programs. Lambertz says that he was already fascinated by the “Formula 1 in school” competition as a primary school student at the open day at Graf-Rasso. "We are still fully motivated," emphasizes Lambertz. "This time we want to be on the podium at the German Championship too."

It is scheduled by the organizers after the summer vacation on September 18 in Heilbronn - in the hope of being able to hold it again in front of an audience. There, the four students also want to gain experience for the next year. Then they compete in the senior sector - the competition for the upper grades.
