Austria will stop Thursday, sooner than expected, from systematically controlling its land borders, with the exception of those it shares with Italy, three months after restricting freedom of movement in order to curb the coronavirus pandemic, said the government.

"From tomorrow, the controls will become punctual and will no longer be automatic," said Foreign Minister Alexandre Schallenberg at a press conference in Vienna, adding that the restrictions with Italy should be kept due to the number of contaminations still recorded in this country. Austria had previously planned to restore full freedom of movement with its eastern and northern neighbors on June 15.
