Customs officers conducted an anti-illicit cigarette operation in Yuen Long yesterday (2nd), seized about 8 million suspected illicit cigarettes in a metal house, and detained a suspected truck involved in the case. In addition, personnel conducted an intelligence analysis today (4th) at the Kwai Chung Customs Building Inspection Station to inspect an ocean container that reported to contain paper towels and arrived in Vietnam from Vietnam and was ready to be transferred to the Philippines. After inspection, customs officers found about 7.9 million suspected illicit cigarettes in the container. 22 cases are still under investigation.

From 2014 to 2019, Hai seized 52.1 million, 71.9 million, 63 million, 60.7 million, 53.4 million and 55 million suspected illicit cigarettes, respectively. Together with the illicit cigarette cases cracked in these two days, the Customs have seized nearly 85 million suspected illicit cigarettes so far this year, exceeding the single-year seizures in the past 6 years and hitting a 7-year high.

Customs will continue to intercept from the source based on risk assessment and intelligence analysis, and combat illicit cigarette activities through a multi-pronged enforcement strategy for storage and distribution sales. Customs reiterated that smuggling is a serious crime. According to the "Import and Export Regulations", anyone importing or exporting unmanifested cargo will be liable to a maximum fine of 2 million yuan and imprisonment for 7 years upon conviction; according to the Dutiable Commodities Regulations, anyone who handles or possesses It is illegal to sell or buy illicit cigarettes. Once convicted, the maximum penalty is a fine of 1 million yuan and imprisonment for 2 years.
