A 57-year-old man from the Fürth area had left in the morning alone from the Ofnerboden on Roßfeldstrasse to go over the Kehlstein, Mannlgrat to the Hohen Göll.
Hikers decide to descend towards Purtschellerhaus
At the end of the Mannlgrat at around 2,250 meters in altitude, he decided not to climb the summit anymore, but to go down the Schuster route towards Purtschellerhaus.
And that started a fatal chain of events. The Berchtesgaden mountain rescue service knows this descent, especially at this time of year. Already in the last few days there have been missions on the cobbler route.

The problem: The descent runs on the north side of the mountain. There is still a lot of snow there. For this, the man pulled his so-called bread crumbs, smaller crampons, which are supposed to prevent slipping on smooth railings. Then he descended towards the Purtschellerhaus.
The man had almost made it out of the Fürth area. After he had already mastered most of the descent, he wanted to avoid a last snow field. That turned out to be a fatal mistake.
He slipped and fell about 80 meters above rocky terrain.

At an altitude of 1750 meters, he came to rest. The two witnesses, who had seen the crash, made an emergency call and we went down to the casualty over dangerous steep terrain.

The condition of the man who was initially responsive deteriorated, so that despite the resuscitation measures carried out, the incoming emergency doctor of the Austrian rescue helicopter C6 from Salzburg could only determine death.
The demanding rescue of the crashed was carried out by two police mountain guides and two mountain guards from the Berchtesgaden mountain rescue service in collaboration with the police helicopter.
