State Department Inspector General Steve Lynnck confirmed that President Donald Trump dismissed him because he questioned allegations of justifications for arms sales to the Saudi regime and began an investigation into them, according to members of the US Congress.
Linnik was sacked on May 15, becoming the fourth government watchdog to be dismissed by Trump in the past few months.
Members of Congress said, as reported by Reuters, that a State Department inspector general fired him unexpectedly last month, confirming yesterday that he was investigating a national emergency to justify arms sales to Saudi Arabia when he was sacked.
Elliot Engel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and other Democratic members, indicated in a statement that Linnick also confirmed in an interview with members of Congress that he was investigating news that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his wife had misused the ministry's resources.
