Before George Floyd's death: 18 complaints were filed against Derek Chauvin
The 44-year-old, who worked for the Minneapolis police for 18 years, has previously been accused of violent acts on duty, the local newspaper Star Tribune said. A total of 18 complaints have been filed against Derek Chauvin .
According to Communities Against Police Brutality, a nonprofit organization in Minnesota that has created a database of complaints against state officials, Chauvin received verbal references for the use of "degrading tones" and "derogatory language". It is not known exactly what the complaints are based on.
Derek Chauvin and George Floyd worked together in a night club
Derek Chauvin and George Floyd may have known each other before May 25th. Both men worked in the El Nuevo Rodeo Club, which is in the immediate vicinity of the third police station in Minneapolis. Floyd and Chauvin were both security officers there, as former club owner Maya Santamaria confirmed to CNN. "You probably didn't know each other," she said, but added that in the club, all the employees had worked together on certain nights: "Your paths may have crossed."
