With a view to compensating the educational losses of its students, the Special Education Institute for the Rehabilitation of the Blind in Damascus has launched an audio library that includes recordings of the teaching curriculum for the students of the Institute in the basic and secondary education certificates.
The records in the library, which are currently published on the institute’s official page on Facebook, focus on the main points of the curriculum for basic and secondary education certificates, according to the institute’s director, Nada Abu Al Shamat, indicating that the institute’s 35 teaching staff and teachers prepared the materials recorded in cooperation with the “From the Heart” initiative. Abu Al-Shamat indicated that the audio recordings took into account the delivery of the information in a simple and appropriate way and answering the questions of the students on the Facebook page immediately by the competent teacher.
Abu Al-Shamat pointed out that the institute distributed in advance to all its students “women” that include recordings for the curriculum so that they can continue their education at home during the suspension period in schools as a result of precautionary measures to tackle the Corona virus. These records were published on the official page of the institute where they were later compiled and the audio library launched The current program, which mainly targets students of the two degrees, to be expanded later with scientific, cultural and health materials that benefit students in general.
Abu Al-Shamat stated that compensation for the educational loss for the students of the two certificates is also through groups on "WhatsApp" established by the teachers to communicate with their students and answer any question or explanation indicating that the official page of the institute on Facebook is available to everyone so that any student from persons with visual impairments can either Inside or outside the institute, benefit from them and interact with teachers, in order to support students during the exam preparation period.
Abu Al-Shamat revealed that the launch of the audio library is a first step to establish a “educational platform” to teach people with visual impairments remotely to various educational curricula.
It is noteworthy that the institute includes for the academic year 2019-2020 about 150 students of various degrees of visual impairment from the age of 6 to 18 years who receive their education according to the curriculum of the Ministry of Education, which is printed in a "Braille" way.
