Oberschleissheim - Luise Schleich was 81 years old and, apart from her dementia , fit and in a good mood. The old lady was popular in her Oberschleissheim AWO retirement home , where she had been living for nine years, and was considered uncomplicated and friendly. But then Corona came. Every Sunday the family came to the Oberschleissheim AWO retirement home, they laughed together and played "Memory". The visits of her children were Luise Schleich's "highlight", as daughter Heidi Posselt recalls.

But in the course of the exit restrictions, the retirement home imposed a ban on visiting, a week later the Bavarian Infection Protection Ordinance came into force with an even stricter ban on visiting and entering nursing homes. For Luise Schleich, who was previously in her wheelchair, this meant that she was mainly confined to bed. When daughter Heidi called and asked about the mom, she got the information: "Eat well, sleep a lot."

But soon it was no longer good. The general condition of the 81-year-old deteriorated, a doctor on call diagnosed pulmonary edema. In the high phase of the corona pandemic, Luise Schleich was therefore brought to the Schwabing hospital on April 21 “due to unclear diagnosis”; there the clinic had created a department only for the care of Covid 19 patients. But the all-clear came quickly: "A friendly doctor told us that our mother did not have Covid-19 ," recalls Heidi Posselt. However, according to the Bavarian Infection Protection Ordinance, it was impossible to move back to the Oberschleissheim Senior Park . "According to our current assessment, your mother's hospitalization was a so-called inpatient stay (...), which meant that it was not possible to take your mother back in," wrote Maike Hessel, consultant for senior care at AWO Munich to the children.

Senior woman not infected with corona: After the clinic, Luise Schleich is not allowed to go back to the retirement home

The problem: The 81-year-old who was not infected with corona was also not allowed to stay in the Schwabing hospital . "We simply have no place for her at the moment," explained daughter Heidi - who hadn't seen her mother for five weeks.

On April 27, a solution was finally found for Luise Schleich: she was transferred to the Schön day clinic for dementia in Munich, where she was again put in strict quarantine . However, the 81-year-old was getting worse and worse: she complained loudly, probably suffering from loneliness, the family's nursing staff kept saying. But "this mental suffering" is treated "with mood enhancers and pain relievers". The family suffered with: "My mother was afraid, she was demented! She didn't understand what was going on around her, ”says daughter Heidi Posselt.

Luise Schleich back at the home: a last farewell to the family

On May 6, Luise Schleich was finally allowed to go back to her home in Oberschleissheim. But her will to live didn't want to come back; in the meantime, the children received an email offer to make a digital video call to the mother via Skype. Finally, on May 8, the family was contacted again. Because of Luise Schleich's critical health condition, two people are allowed into the home by way of a special permit. Heidi Posselt and her four siblings came together: “We all wanted to say goodbye. Should we have drawn lots of which two of us are allowed to go to mom's room again? ”In the end, the staff turned a blind eye, only a few hours later, on the morning of May 9, Luise Schleich died. Her daughter Heidi says: “My mom didn't die from Corona . She died because of Corona. "

After the death of 81-year-old: "You can't deal with the weakest in society!"

The daughter does not blame the nursing home or the clinics: “This is a small, good home. And the doctors were all friendly. ”Nevertheless, it was“ an absurdity what was done to my mother ”! Sure, says Heidi Posselt, "sooner or later" her mother would have died. "But she would not have had to suffer isolation for seven weeks beforehand!" The regulations in the Bavarian Infection Protection Act "contribute to the fact that old people die". With all understanding of the threat posed by the corona pandemic, she is therefore convinced: "This is not the way to deal with the weakest in society!"
