The future of the Schnitzer area is a sensitive issue in Bernbeuren, which the new mayor is putting on the back burner for the time being. Karl Schleich makes it clear that water is a priority. Nevertheless, the town hall now has to take care of the "carver" as the new owner.

Bernbeuren - Shortly before the end of their term, ex-mayor Martin Hinterbrandner and the town council had quickly acquired the old barn and inn. Successor Karl Schleich and the newly elected committee must now see what they do with it.

Drinking water is a priority

In any case, Schleich is not in a hurry: "The barn has to wait first," he says. His main focus is currently on drinking water from Bernbeuren, which, to the public's dismay, still has to be chlorinated. An Ansbach expert recently visited the town council to offer his help with the investigation and repair of the dilapidated drinking water supply. A decision is still pending.

As is well known, the municipality also has an older renovation concept. It was created by the engineering office with whom Bernbeuren has been working for years. The work would probably have started long ago if companies had been found to carry it out. As reported, all specialists were recently fully booked. Anyway: "It's a lot of money," says the mayor. And ultimately the municipal council has to decide how to proceed. The first step is now "that we take the chlorine away," emphasizes Schleich.

Emergency operation for buildings

Nevertheless, the local council, which last met almost weekly, cannot completely ignore the topic of "carvers". "You have to secure the inventory," the mayor admits. And this includes first of all checking the heating system. An emergency operation must be started so that the building is not damaged, it said in the council meeting last Tuesday. Markus Socher (UWG) warned that water pipes could freeze in winter.

It was a good thing that a local plumber was among the audience in the Auerbergalle. He knows the heating in the "Schnitzer". And he immediately agreed to look at her. Then it should become clear how much money the municipality has to take in hand for the emergency operation. So far this is still a big unknown.

Local council must decide

The mayor is currently unable to say how the “Schnitzer” will continue in the long term. First of all, the municipal council must make a fundamental decision, he explains on request of the SN. Just like water, it is "a huge thing", emphasizes the town hall boss, who therefore wants to tackle the two issues one after the other and not at the same time.

As reported several times, ex-mayor Hinterbrandner and his town council had initiated a municipal monument concept for the Schnitzer area. At the end of this should be the realization of a consumer market in the center, which Bernbeurer longs for.

Talks with monument protection

The community must of course bring the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments on board, which in the past has vehemently resisted the demolition of the listed Schnitzer barn. "There have been no talks yet, but we want to do it as soon as possible," says Karl Schleich, who asks for understanding. "It doesn't work all at once."
