Flowering islands in public spaces in the municipality of Eurasburg: The Local Agenda wants to ensure that in the future.

Eurasburg - A meadow at the entrance to Achmühle makes Carola Belloni and Wolfgang Neuerburg's eyes light up: waist-high cranesbill, meadow chervil and red clover, white daisies and purple vetches sprout there. Wild bees and bumblebees buzz around between the grasses and flowers, beetles cling to long stalks.

The environmental and energy officers and the head of the local agenda want such blooming islands in many places in the municipality of Eurasburg. "We would like everything to be a little more colorful," says Belloni. "We wanted to improve biodiversity and counteract the death of insects," added Neuerburg. In order to provide bees and other insects with a livelihood all year round, the agenda wants to bring wildflowers to public areas in the future. The idea developed from the sustainability strategy that had been adopted by the municipal council at the request of the Greens in the past legislative period.

Citizens should donate wildflower seeds

Now the help of the citizens is needed. "Wherever wildflowers grow in the garden, people are called upon to donate seeds," says Neuerburg. Moritz Sappl explains that because purchased seed mixtures are often unsuitable for domestic soils, the municipality wants to create its own store of wildflower seeds. “You have to push that and stick to it. The call today serves to prepare for 2021, ”said the Mayor of Eurasburg. Until next spring, there was now time to find suitable areas for the “wildflower islands”, to prepare them and then to bring in the seeds, which the citizens should donate generously until then.

Wolfgang Neuerburg explains how this works: “If you have wildflowers on your property, you should let them stand until they are almost ripe, then cut off the stems with the seed pod and hang them upside down in a paper bag or a fabric bag for a week or two. Until the dry seeds can be removed or fall off by themselves - in the bag. Alternatively, you can simply place the plants on paper to dry. Storage in plastic foils or bags is taboo because mold could form in them. The dried seeds are collected in the town hall.

Bring people closer to nature

In addition, the campaign aims to “bring people closer to nature and make connections understandable,” emphasizes Carola Belloni. For example, by making people aware that and why blades of grass are important for butterflies and the benefits for insects if the wild flowers stay longer.

People who want to participate but are unsure are helped. A list of wildflower species will soon be available on the municipality's website. You can also look up the Internet or in books to determine the type of plant. “If you have any doubts, you can also take a picture and email us. We will then get in touch, ”promises Belloni.

Interested fellow campaigners should definitely take a tip from the environmental officers to heart, especially if they want to collect wildflowers on walks through nature: Do not collect in the meadow, but only on the edge. "Otherwise you trample what you want to get."
