Good news for all cyclists in Freising: the parking capacity at the train station is almost doubled. A special system makes it possible.

Freising - Finally the time has come: The old bicycle parking facility at the Freising regional bus station will soon be replaced by a modern double-decker bicycle parking facility. As the city of Freising reports, the capacity of the bicycle parking facility at the regional bus station can then almost be doubled to 618 parking spaces.

During construction, however, parked bicycles must be removed from the areas marked in time from July 5th. Bicycles may then have to be temporarily parked a few meters away.

A special system is created

With the double-decker parking system, more bicycles can be stored in the same space in a space-saving manner, similar to a duplex garage for cars. With a pull-out handle, the bicycles can be parked on rails one above the other. The rail is pulled down by hand and - hydraulically supported - pushed up again. There are brackets on the rails for connecting the bicycles against theft. Double-decker parking systems have now become a tried and tested system and are already located, for example, at the train stations in Munich-Pasing, Garching and at the visitor park.

Project is generously subsidized

The idea of expanding the bike storage facilities, which are located on DB grounds, has been around for a long time and has been substantiated in the mobility concept. The project got rolling with the "Bike + Ride Offensive" by Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU), which was launched in 2019. The “Bike + Ride Offensive” is intended to create 100,000 new bicycle parking spaces at train stations across Germany by 2022. The federal government's National Climate Protection Initiative is funding 40 percent of the installation of the Bike + Ride facilities. In addition, the project is subsidized by the government of Upper Bavaria with a good 40 percent.

With the start of the project in 2019, the city of Freising had submitted and approved corresponding funding applications. Now the first step can be taken to improve the bike parking situation at the station.

The park is constructed in two sections

In order not to restrict the availability of bicycle parking spaces too much during the construction phase, the assembly is carried out in two sections. It starts with the part of the layout located at the station building, i.e. the uncovered area and the first two rows under the existing glass roof. The remaining stands under the existing glass roof are exchanged at different times.

Bauhof has big requests to all cyclists

To ensure that the construction work runs smoothly, the city of Freising asks all users to remove their bicycles from the areas marked by the construction yard by July 5. Bicycles not removed by the deadline must be properly removed and stored by the municipal building yard. The city does not pay for any damage to castles. In the course of the first phase of construction, it is asked to switch to the surrounding bicycle parking facilities.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in the summer

For the second construction phase, all bikes must be removed by July 26th at the latest; The building yard will mark accordingly here too. Since the first section will already be completed at this point, the newly created capacities can then be used.

The construction work should be completed by mid-August 2020. (ft)
